MEDIATION FOR THE SAKE OF PEACE

On 30 November, 2018 Turkey hosted the V Istanbul conference on mediation "Enhancing the practice of mediation for sustaining peace". The conference was held under the auspices of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Turkey and with the active participation of experts of the UN, OSCE, OIC and other organizations. Senior research officer of the department of geopolitics and regional studies of the Library of Elbassy Yerlan Uskenbayev attended the conference.

Since 2012, the results of the Five Istanbul mediation conferences have been four UN General Assembly resolutions that have played a significant role in achieving peace processes and maintaining peace.

"Under the auspices of the conference, three plenary sessions were held, which addressed issues such as the link between sustainable development and mediation, how cooperation between the UN and other international organizations can help to maintain peace, how to ensure the broad participation of youth and women in the mediation process, whether digitalization can contribute to the maintenance of peace and more. At these sessions high-level politicians, mediators and experts shared their practical and theoretical knowledge. The initiative of the President of Kazakhstan on holding Syrian peace talks – Astana Talk was especially noted. The experts emphasized importance of holding such actions in achieving peace processes", – told E. Uskenbaev.
