Political activity

1969-1979 – party, Komsomol work in Temirtau of the Karaganda region and the Karaganda regional committee of party.

1979-1984 – the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.

1984-1989 – Chairman of the board of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR.

1989-1991 – the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.

From February to April, 1990 – the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR.

Since April, 1990 – the President of the Kazakh SSR.

Since December, 1991 – the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On April 29, 1995 – extension of powers of the President Nursultan Nazarbayev till 2000 following the results of a public referendum.  

January 10, 1999 – Nursultan Nazarbayev on an alternative basis was elected the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, having received 79,78 % of votes of voters.

On December 4, 2005 – following the results of presidential elections Nursultan Nazarbayev who collected 91,15% of votes is elected the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On June 15, 2010, the status of Elbasy (Leader of the Nation) was assigned to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev based on the newly adopted constitutional law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy".

April 3, 2011 – Nursultan Nazarbayev was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan following the results of presidential elections (95,55% of votes).

On April 26, 2015 – on early elections the incumbent president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev won a convincing victory again.

March 19, 2019, he voluntarily decided to resign as the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since March 20, 2019, he is the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
